This
year’s lingerie and swimwear is sexier than ever! We know what
that means --- waxing! Waxing the bikini area sounds like a painful
prospect but there are ways to ease the pain involved and even procedures
other than waxing that aren’t painful at all. The most important
thing to you may be using a method that allows for the most time between
procedures. With the following information and steps you will be able
to make more informed decisions about your bikini area hair removal!
Tips for Brazilian bikini waxing:
If pain and discomfort is a main concern use a pain reducing gel or
cream available from pharmacists. These solutions should be applied
30 to 60 minutes before waxing so the skin is numbed beforehand.
Apply a thin layer of wax in the direction of the hair growth and peel
back with a rapid movement close to the skin.
Do not pull up or out, rather pull back.
Clean the skin with a warm moist towel afterwards to remove excess wax.
Avoid wearing tight clothing over freshly waxed areas to minimize the
risk of irritation and ingrown hairs. 24-48 hours after pubic hair removal
waxing, exfoliate the skin (with a Loofa sponge for example) to prevent
the dead skin from accumulating and causing hair to become ingrown.
Waxing Alternatives
Sugaring is similar to waxing except instead of wax various adhesive
compounds are used to trap the hair, which is then pulled out by the
roots. It is also yields a very temporary result of 3-8 weeks. The cost
is similar to waxing, and there are also do-it-yourself products sold.
Chemical Hair Removers include a variety of elixirs and lotions; unfortunately,
they are generally ineffective and often peddled by scam artists. One
legitimate product, Vaniqa, has demonstrated some limited effectiveness.
This is a prescription cream marketed for the removal of female facial
hair; its active ingredient, eflornithine, is toxic to hair follicles.
For unknown reasons, Vaniqa does not work for everyone. About 58% of
women who tried Vaniqa in clinical trials had some improvement. The
other 42% had no improvement. Vaniqa takes at least two months to begin
working and it must be applied twice daily for the first 2-6 months.
It runs about $53 per tube, and a tube lasts about 1-2 months. For facial
hair that works out to about $600 the first year, then $300 per year
thereafter.
Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) devices use light energy, in a similar fashion
to lasers, to vaporize the hair follicle. They use xenon flash lamps
to generate fluorescent light which is then passed through cutoff filters
to remove most of the undesirable wavelengths of light. These devices
are sometimes misrepresented as “Laser Hair Removal”, but
they are not true lasers because the generated light is not linear or
coherent. IPL is very effective for certain skin procedures such as
photo rejuvenation or spider vein removal. IPL is also used for hair
removal, but the filtered light is “noisy” and interacts
more with skin structures than the pure 810 nm wavelength of laser light,
so it must be used at lower energy levels. A complete IPL treatment
for legs costs $2000-$3000.
Electrolysis is a method in which each hair is treated individually.
A needle is inserted under the skin into the base of each hair and an
electric current is passed to damage the follicle. A qualified professional
should perform needle electrolysis and it can be very expensive since
it is time consuming (it may take one hundred hours to clear a large
area) and multiple treatments are needed. Electrolysis can be painful
and there is a risk of scarring and infection. Estimated cost for completed
treatment is $1,000-$3,000 for legs. Results are long lasting, but some
hair may grow back.
