Protecting Your Hair From Sun, Chlorine & Salt Water

Protecting Your Hair From Sun, Chlorine & Salt WaterWhat’s the sun doing NOW? It seems that along with summer come all kinds of warnings about how to protect yourself from the sun. I feel for the sun, especially because all it does is let off its radiation to keep us Earthings alive and well!

The truth of the matter is, however that though it gives off life sustaining light it can also be harmful if we aren’t responsible about how we expose ourselves to it. Many of us don’t think about the damage to our hair by the sun. I know I never though about it before now, but it’s true that the same UV and UB rays that damage our skin if over exposed causes the same damage to our hair.

This is noticeable in the lightening of our hair when we spend large amounts of time outdoors. The reason our hair is lightened is because the pigment is damaged by the sun, just like when we tan, the pigment is damaged.

To avoid this sun damage, wear a hat. Limit your time out side, especially in the water as wet hair attracts the sun. There are also hair products that offer sun screen for your hair. Check these out!

Chlorine

Summer is tough on hair and swimming pools can ruin your hair (I had a friend who was a competitive swimmer and she literally had green hair for the better part of one year).

What to do?

Protect your hair before going in by applying a deep conditioner. Immediately after, rinse your hair in apple cider vinegar, then with club soda. The carbonation will lift excess salt and chlorine out.

Salt Water

Salt water will dry your hair, just like chlorine. The only difference is that it won’t also discolor it. To take care of hair when your playing in the ocean make sure you rinse it thoroughly when your finished. Many beaches have showers where you can rinse off – take along your shampoo and conditioner to get that salt water out of your hair ASAP.

Another trick to fab summer hair is to switch shampoo and conditioner. Try looking for brands that pay special attention to hydrating hair. Try keeping your hair simple in the summer, don’t over style and try not to blow dry it. Get a sexy summer hair cut that’s low maintenance.
